Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randal Cary, son of Barbara Cary of Cumberland and Dana Cary of Topsham, returned from a seven-month deployment to Iraq while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 homebased in Huntsville, Ala.

Cary’s unit supported U.S. Marine and Army efforts by building forward operating bases in three locations. The Seabees also rebuilt a large section of a major runway in support of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and installed a helicopter landing pad able to withstand mortar fire.

Personnel provided security to convoys carrying building materials, supplies and equipment. They also escorted convoys. NMCB 24 consists of 400 personnel who specialize in advance base construction, battle damage repair, contingency engineering, humanitarian assistance and disaster recovery support around the world.

Cary is a 1987 graduate of Greely High School of Cumberland.
