LEWISTON – Through a partnership between Sen- iorsPlus and AARP, Seniors- Plus staff members Anita Wiles and Connie Belaire will be at the AARP Member Lunch and Learn on Monday, Nov. 14, to explain the new Medicare prescription drug program and recruit volunteers to work with area seniors.
The new benefit will begin Jan. 1, and many seniors are unclear about how the program will affect them and their health care, how they can access the information they need and how to sign up for the appropriate plan.
“The thousands of Medicare recipients in our service area who are eligible to receive these prescription drug benefits have questions that need to be answered,” said Wiles, Maine Medicare Education Partnership coordinator at SeniorsPlus.
“We are doing all we can to reach everyone who needs help, but our staff resources are limited. That’s where the volunteers come in. With more people trained to provide information, we are able to reach many more seniors than we could on our own,” she said.
Volunteers will greet people and explain the Medicare D enrollment process. They will show seniors how to compare plans and answer questions. SeniorsPlus will conduct volunteer training sessions to help people learn what they need to know.
The Lunch and Learn will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at the Hilton Garden Inn-Auburn Riverwatch, 14 Great Falls Plaza. Reservations are required; call AARP at 1-877-926-8300 to make a reservation or for more information.
