SALEM TOWNSHIP – Residents in all towns in SAD 58 voted to approve a request by the district to add $150,000 to the budget for an addition to Stratton School.
Phillips voters expressed support for the measure 175 to 108, while in Kingfield the margin of support was wider: 239 to 99.
In Strong, residents approved the budget increase 234 to 156; in Eustis, 145 to 55; and in Avon, voters accepted the district’s request, 84 to 54.
The school board’s request for a budget increase came after construction costs jumped in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Superintendent Quenten Clark said Tuesday he expected the measure to pass, citing the towns’ historic support for their students.
“The communities don’t have a lot of money,” he said, “but what they do have is kids, and they support their kids.”
