HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) – A Meriden rock-climber fell about 100 feet to his death at Sleeping Giant State Park on Saturday afternoon, Department of Environmental Protection officials said.
Adam Barnes, 24, was scaling some loose rocks at a quarry in the park when he fell, DEP officials said.
The quarry is considered a dangerous place to climb, though DEP Sgt. James Warren said he did not know whether there are signs in the park to indicate that.
“It’s very ill-advised to try to climb this,” Warren said. “Even experienced climbers don’t climb it. It’s a loose face surface and it’s very easy to lose your footing.”
State police were called to investigate, but there was no indication the death was anything other than an accident, Sgt. J. Paul Vance said.
Barnes fell about 3:30 p.m.
A Ridgefield man was badly injured at the park in February of this year when his rappelling equipment failed and he fell from a cliff.
And in 1998, a New Haven man fell to his death from an icy cliff in the park. He was hiking in sneakers.
