On what I’m calling “Black Saturday,” I received a letter from the city of Auburn. The content had the projected assessment of my next year’s taxes. My property taxes almost doubled. I was stunned, as I’m sure most of my neighbors were, with this early Christmas present.
It just doesn’t seem right, in these times of hardship, with the extremely high gas, oil and electricity prices. It was just a year ago people were misled by the government on how bad the side effects of a tax cap would be, so the issue was voted down.
Now, Auburn officials feel free to drive hardworking people out of town because of the new property assessments.
I think most of us, if we’re lucky, are getting a 2 or 3 percent pay increase a year. I do not see any justification for doubling a person’s property taxes. We all live on certain incomes, and we have to survive on them and pay all the bills. I can’t even imagine the feeling of the elderly living on a fixed income.
I hope this will be the message to the tax assessor and other people responsible for the revaluation project. I hope they will find a job where less sensitivity for human feelings is required.
