Dear Sun Spots: I am hoping some of your readers can help me.
I am the president of The North Jay White Granite Park Association. We are in the process of fund-raising for a new museum to preserve the history of the quarry in Jay. We are also looking for any tools, pictures or artifacts from the time of its operation in the early 1900s. It employed people from all over the world, as well as many locals. If any one has any information, including their stories, I would love to hear from them. Thank you! Contact me at (207) 645-2581 (day), or (207) 645-5079 (after 2 p.m.). – Mary Howes, Jay.
Dear Sun Spots: Is there anyone in the area who repairs porcelain dishes? Also, anyone who restores old photographs? No Name, Auburn.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots did not locate any porcelain repair business. However, if it’s a matter of reattaching a broken piece, you might want to check your local hardware store, which is likely to carry glue that might assist you with this. In addition, you might want to contact Just Black & White, 142 High St., in the State Theatre building, third floor, Room 303, Portland, at (207) 761-5861, to set up an appointment. David Mishkin will be happy to assist you. They are open by appointment only on Mondays and Tuesdays and from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Saturdays, they’re open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dear Sun Spots: I read your column all the time. I am hoping that you can help me out. We have six boxes of women’s clothing that we would like to send down to the Gulf Coast for the hurricane victims. If there are any church groups who are doing this, could you please call me at 743-2025. Thank you very much. – Jim Riman, Harrison.
Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for a white Sierra 100-percent poly man’s vest. Where can I find a retail store in the towns of Farmington or Lewiston-Auburn? Many thanks for your help. You have a great column! – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: I so enjoy your column each day. Now I have a request. I am looking for a pattern for knitting a sleeveless vest. I have looked everywhere and cannot find one. It has to open in the front. Please help! Thank you. I can be reached at (207) 782-5403. – Anita Dulac, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: I live on West Bates Street, just before the Auburn Mall. We go that way to Lewiston sometimes and we were wondering what the United States flag was up on a tree for? I guess it’s on an island there. This road connects to Russell Street eventually. – Leona Brown, No Town.
Answer: Sun Spots has not heard anything about this and would please encourage readers to write into the column if they know the answer to this one. Alternatively, if the flag is on someone’s property, it might be worth paying a visit to that property owner and asking them the question yourself.
Dear Sun Spots: I am wondering if there is any store that carries true wool socks, in white? I haven’t been able to find any white, wool crew socks since Flanders Clothing Store in Auburn went out of business. Thank you. – Norman Miller, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: I thank you for all your columns. It is helpful for anyone needing help.
I am writing readers of Sun Spots, asking you if anyone has the names of some good old books and authors? I know of a good book written in 1942 and by George McCready Price called “If You Were the Creator.” The whole world should have this book. – A Friend, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Once again I’m hoping that the Sun Spot readers can help me out. Last year, I asked for issues of National Geographic and was overwhelmed by the response. I hope there are still some piled up in garages, cellars, etc., that you want to get rid of. My dad is still in the Rumford Community Home and reads them every day. I’d appreciate hearing from you all and will try to pick up as many as possible. Thanks again. I can be reached at (207) 364-4530. – Cheryl in Rumford.
