LEWISTON – Stan Goff, who became a passionate critic of U.S. militarism after serving in the U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam, Haiti, Grenada and Somalia, will speak this week in Farmington and Lewiston.
Goff will speak on “Iraq: Energy Wars and Extermination” at 3:30 p.m. today in the University of Maine at Farmington’s Thomas Auditorium. He will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday in Chase Hall Lounge at Bates College.
His son has done two tours in Iraq, and Goff says he sees only waste and carnage for control of oil in the Iraq war. He is a spokesman for Military Families Against the War.
Goff said he retired after he found the military occupation in Haiti to be racist and not designed to restore constitutional government. He characterizes himself as coming to his audiences “from the belly of the beast” of U.S. imperialism.
Goff also will speak in Orono, Portland, Biddeford and Augusta during his visit to Maine.
Sponsors include Veterans for Peace, Pax Christi Maine, Maine for Peace and Justice in Israel/Palestine, Maine Haiti Solidarity, Peace Action Maine and several campus organizations at the several sites.
