GREENE – Maine Poly and the town have developed a plan to get the company restarted and the town to get its taxes.
Maine Poly, a producer of plastic bags and laminates, owes $124,136.65 in taxes and interest, Town Manager Charlie Noonan told selectmen Monday. The agreement calls for the town to waive all but $90,000 in taxes. If the money is paid immediately, Noonan said, the town will discharge all liens.
“By agreeing to this, the town will receive some of its tax money,” Chairman Ron Grant said. “And keep people employed.”
Noonan said the company plans to reopen.
Due to finances, Maine Poly closed last August, laying off more than 20 workers. In 2001, the Greene factory declared bankruptcy. It eventually closed but reopened after an infusion of capital.
