LEWISTON – Dorothy B. Pohly, a resident of Weld Road in Wilton, died peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
She was born on June 15, 1921, in Jay, the daughter of Reginald and Josephine Brann. In 1942, she married Glen Stanley Pohly and was a loving, devoted wife until his death on March 4, 1958.
As a young widow with minimal resources, she used her strength of will to provide for five children by working as a waitress at several local restaurants. She also found time to tend a garden and can vegetables. In later years, she was a U.S. Census taker and the activities director at both Franklin Manor One and Pomeroy Hill nursing homes. Even though she worked extremely hard her entire life, Dorothy’s hands were always beautiful and elegant.
Known locally as “Aunt Dot,” a select few became recipients of a delicious assortment of homemade candies during the Christmas holiday. Dorothy gave her family a love of good food and conversation. She was the master of both!
She possessed an independent and forever curious mind that complemented her passion for travel and insatiable appetite for reading. Her outgoing personality and quick wit shone through, causing her to make lasting friendships at home and abroad.
Dorothy was a longtime member of the Wilton American Legion Auxiliary, a Girl Scout leader and active in the County Extension programs. She was chairman of the Franklin County Democratic Party during the Kennedy era and always demonstrated a keen interest in state and national politics.
Dorothy spent vacations in Europe and on luxurious ships, but none of these compared to the times she had throughout her life with family and friends on Webb Lake. All who knew her will miss Dorothy.
She is survived by her five children and their families, Jeff Pohly and Diana Sullivan of Virginia Beach, Va., Becci Starr and Scott Mattes of Boulder, Colo., David and Karen Pohly of Longmont, Colo., Daniel Pohly of Longmont, Colo., and Jody Pohly and Niels Thorn of Copenhagen, Denmark; seven grandchildren, Steven P., Deborah, Joseph, Morgan, Steven G., Andrea and Megan; and her four great-grandchildren, Felicia, Aidan, Seia and Jeffrey.
She was predeceased by her parents; and siblings, Lauriston Brann and Janice Lake.
