AUBURN – An Auburn man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that he bilked the Social Security system and Department of Housing and Urban Development out of more than $30,000.

Prosecutors say 69-year-old Wesley Thompson lied about his income between April 1995 and March 2001 in order to continue receiving Social Security funds and housing assistance.

Thompson is charged in the indictment with defrauding the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as Social Security fraud and theft of public money. In all, he faces six counts.

Investigators said Thompson failed to disclose that he was working as a personal-care attendant in order to keep receiving disability income benefits. He is also accused of hiding facts of his employment while receiving Section 8 housing assistance at his Auburn home.

The case against Thompson was investigated by a host of local, state and federal agencies, including Auburn police, the U.S. attorney’s office, HUD’s Office of Inspector General and the Social Security’s Office of Inspector General.
