FARMINGTON – Heirlooms of Tomorrow of 710 Wilton Road will have as December Artists of the Month Stan and Barbara Keirstead of Farmington. An open house to introduce their work will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 3. Refreshments will be served.
Barbara is a native of Strong, graduated from Westbrook College and met Stan at Sugarloaf. She began painting in oils, but her life changed when she took a watercolor class from Stan.
They married in 1980. Barbara is particularly good at capturing the beauty of flowers, which fill their many gardens.
Stan is a native of Greenville, graduated from Farmington State Teachers College and taught in the Jay and Livermore Falls school systems before moving to Mt. Blue High School to teach history.
He was appointed principal for a 60-day term upon the sudden departure of the principal. Eighteen years later, in 1983, Stan retired as principal.
His painting hobby began in oil, but after expressing his frustration to fellow teacher and artist Dave Burnell, he was invited to visit Burnell’s studio and observe his techniques.
That visit changed Stan’s direction. He has combined his love of education with his favorite hobby and conducts regular watercolor classes at their home studio in Farmington.
