BRUNSWICK – A Bowdoin College student committee will award Common Good Grants to local nonprofit organizations for the fifth year.

The Common Good Grant program, made possible through a restricted gift of $10,000 from an anonymous donor, teaches Bowdoin students about grants and philanthropy while building a relationship with nonprofit organizations in the greater Brunswick community.

A 12-member student-led committee will review applications and award grants, with no single grant exceeding $2,500.

The total amount of grant money to be distributed this year is $14,000. The additional $4,000 in grant funds is due to the Bowdoin class of 2005, which, upon graduation last May, allocated their class gift to the Common Good Grant program.

Any nonprofit organization in the greater Brunswick area (Brunswick, Harpswell, Freeport, Topsham, Bath, Bowdoinham, Orr’s Island, Bailey Island, Woolwich, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls, Bowdoin and Yarmouth) may apply for a 2006 Common Good Grant.

Applications are available from the Bowdoin Community Service Resource Center and are due Monday, Feb. 6.

All applicants will be notified of funding decisions on or before Monday, April 3. Checks will be awarded on that date at Bowdoin’s Common Good Grant Awards Ceremony. Grants are intended for use between April 13, 2006, and April 10, 2007.

An optional free grant-writing workshop for those applying will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Bowdoin.

For more information or to request an application, contact Student Directors Doris Ramirez (dramirez@bowdoin.edu) or Bruce Baird (bbaird@bowdoin.edu). Applications are also available online at www.bowdoin.edu/communityservice.
