LEWISTON – Major Lionel Guay and members of the Lewiston City Council recognized each member of the Lewiston Smashers during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Coach Anita Murphy’s 14-under intermediate tennis team captured the State, New England and Northeast championships in USTA Youth Team Tennis in recent action. Team members include Michael Butler, Chantalle Lavertu, Emilie Cloutier, Abby Blaisdell, Elliott Chicoine, Matthew Butler, Devin VanDyke, Mary Emerson, Conroy Leblond and Francesca Lally.

Eric Driscoll, the USTA Youth Team Tennis Coordinator for Maine and New Hampshire, says this type of competition is like the Little League World Series. The Lewiston Smashers is one of only four teams in the entire country to reach this level of success.

Driscoll says of Murphy, “She is a fantastic coach and role model for children, young adults, and actually just about anyone.”
