Again, I see in the newspaper stories about property taxes going up in Auburn. It’s so easy for officials to say, “Whatever we need in the towns or city, just raise taxes,” without any thought of where in the world the taxpayers are going to come up with the money.

It is really a shame. No matter how long people have lived in a town or city, if they can’t come up with the increases, they are forced to move.

Many fought and died for the rights of people to live as free people, and not have taxes drive us from our homes.

It is the mindset of some people that if a taxpayer doesn’t have the money to pay the taxes, someone will take the property to collect the money owed. No one should ever have to sell his home because of taxes.

What happened to the property tax relief bill that was passed? And how in the world can a house that used to be worth $60,000 one day be evaluated for $150,000 the next day? How can that be?

I guess no one has heard of depreciation.

Cost-of-living increases do not keep up with other rising costs.
