GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A fishing boat sank after a colliding with another fishing boat off Cape Ann on Friday morning, but no one was seriously injured, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.
Coast Guard Chief Scott Carr said the collision between the Catherine and Rebecca and the SS Melon II occurred seven miles off Rockport at about 7:30 a.m.
The cause of the collision was not known, he said.
Carr said there were a total of five fishermen aboard the two vessels. All of them boarded the Catherine and Rebecca, which was the more stable of the two boats. The Catherine and Rebecca attempted to tow the other boat into Gloucester, but the SS Melon II had suffered serious damage to its bow and began taking on water. The tow eventually was dropped, and the SS Melon II sank, Carr said.
Carr said he did not know the home ports of the two fishing boats.
