WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Maine men’s basketball team fell to High Point in the consolation game of the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic 70-67 despite a school-record 18-for-18 night from the free throw line in the game.

Arizona Reid scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead High Point (1-1).

Jon Sheets finished with 22 points for the Black Bears and also had four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Ernest Turner added 21 points, and Olli Ahvenniemi finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Bowdoin 78, Whittier 58

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Bowdoin earned its first victory of the season, a 78-58 win over Whittier in the consolation game of the Babson Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

Kyle Petrie scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Polar Bears (1-1), earning All-Tournament Team honors in the process.

Bowdoin put away Whittier late, opening up a 54-49 game with an 11-0 run.

Bates 75, E. Connecticut 57

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Rob Stockwell scored 26 points to lead Bates to a 75-57 win over Eastern Connecticut State University in the championship round of the 25th Annual Eastern Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.

Senior guard Sean Cahill tallied 10 points and two steals for the Bobcats (2-0). Bryan Wholey pitched in with eight points, while senior center Matt Chudomel had six pionts and eight rebounds.

Southern Maine 87, Framingham 78

WENHAM, Mass. – Sophomore guards Andy Frost and Walter Phillips combined for 42 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to an 87-78 win over Framingham State College in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Frost knocked down a team-high 22 points and Phillips poured in 20 points of his own as the Huskies (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss.

Chicago 63, Colby 53

CHICAGO, Ill. – Clay Carmody scored a team-high 15 points to lift the University of Chicago to a 63-53 win over Colby in the opening round of the Midway Classic Saturday evening.

UMaine-Farmington 97, UMaine-Presque Isle 45

FARMINGTON – Matt St. John lead all scorers with 15 points for the Beavers as the University of Maine at Farmington defeated Presque Isle 97-45 to advance to the championship game of the Hight Chevrolet Tip-Off Tournament. Trafton Teague added 14 points for UMF (1-0), which knocked down 13 three-pointers in the game.

Brett Miles lead the Owls (0-1) with 11 points. Matt Nichols grabbed 13 rebounds for UMF.

Men’s hockey
Colby 4, UMass-Boston 1

BOSTON, Mass. – Greg Osborne scored a pair of goals and the Polar Bears only allowed seven shots against in the game as Colby downed UMass-Boston 4-1 on the road. Osborne opened the scoring on an assist from Pat Rutherford.

Aaron Burke got the Beacons on the board in the final period, but the Mules (2-0) regained the two-goal cushion on scores by Osborne and Todd O’Hara.

Maine 7, USA 2

ORONO – The University of Maine received scoring support from seven different players as the Black Bears downed the U.S. National Under-18 Team by a score of 7-2 in hockey action Saturday.

The Black Bears (9-3-0) picked up steam as the game progressed, scoring one goal in the first, two in the second and four in the third period. Michel Leveille tied the game at one for Maine within one minute of Michael Carman’s opening goal for the development team.

Goalie Joe Palmer saw a flurry of shots for the Under-18 team, making 39 saves. Matt Lundin turned back 19 shots in 53 minutes of play for Maine, while Ryan Shelley had three saves in the final seven minutes.
