BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The Bennington Museum will soon become the Bennington Museum: Celebrating Vermont’s Heritage.
The museum’s board of trustees has voted to change the name to lure more visitors and better describe what the museum offers.
The board had originally suggested to museum members that the name be changed to the Bennington Museum of Vermont Heritage.
But the nearly 200 members who responded to the board’s letter last month were divided about the idea.
Michael Seely, the vice chairman of the trustees, said the board members also disagreed at Friday’s meeting but later arrived at a “compromise” name.
“The name itself is wonderful but we sort of had to broaden the vision,” he said. “We’re very excited about doing a better job of serving the community and creating traffic.”
The museum, which opened in 1928, has the largest public collection in the world of Grandma Moses art and memorabilia. The museum’s Web site says it offers a rich and impressive collections that help tell the story of Vermont whether it be through furniture, glass, pottery or fine art.
The museum’s new name will be assumed next year. A grand opening may take place sometime in April, Executive Director Stephen J. Perkins has said.
