PERU – Dannie Paine of West Paris told selectmen Monday night what service they could and couldn’t expect if he is hired as animal control officer.

“I don’t handle skunks, snakes and porcupines, and I take people to court if they violate the town ordinances on animals,” he told them. He said he’s also not fond of making midnight calls to Peru.

Selectman William Hine asked him what kind of calls he makes at midnight.

“Well, once the police called me for a drunken driver who had a pit bull in his car and they couldn’t get to the man,” he said. Once there was a late night animal bite, he said, and he instructed the injured person to seek medical help and he would be there in the morning to find the owner of the animal.

Paine said he has taken cases to court approximately 20 times and the town was billed for his mileage and minimum wage for his hours.

Because only three of the five selectmen were in attendance, no decision was made on hiring Paine, who serves six towns.

“We do need an ACO,” said Selectman Norman DeRoche.

The board also reviewed a letter from Fergus Lea of Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments about engineering on East Shore Drive. After reviewing the three levels recommended, the board voted to invite Lea to a selectmen’s meeting to discuss his recommendations. Engineering on level one was estimated to be from $2,000 to $4,000 and more for level two. AVCOG would not do level three because it involved a full engineering study and was much more detailed.

The board approved a request by Walter McKenna for an addition to a camp on East Shore Road as approved by the plumbing inspector.

There was considerable discussion over the spring on Greenwood Road and how to maintain water quality by testing quarterly. No firm decision was made.

A motion was made to count Planning Board hours submitted as meetings for the purpose of billing.
