FARMINGTON – The Religion and Philosophy Club at the University of Maine at Farmington will host a concert by Francesc de Paula Soler, renowned Spanish guitarist, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in Nordica Auditorium.
De Paula Soler has received many honors, including the Medal of St. Vladimir from the Russian Orthodox Church (1988); Plaque of the Catalan Catholic Church Council (1995); honorary member of the “Viva la Musica Club,” Washington State (2003); and tribute by the U.S. House of Representatives (2001, 2002, 2004) in recognition for his artistic merits.
CDs include “Guitar Collection of Francesc de Paula Soler” in the U.S. as well as numerous recordings of classical and Spanish guitar music in Spain. He is known internationally as the “Poet of Guitar.”
The Farmington performance will be a tribute to the 400th anniversary of the publication of the first part of “Don Quixote.” It will be a panoramic view of Spanish music, including traditional Spanish works, in addition to works by Villa Lobos.
Tickets are available at Mickey’s Hallmark in advance and at the door: adults, $6; children $5, free for UMF students. The recital is co-sponsored by Spanish Consulate, Boston.
