The suggestion has been made that the four high schools in Maine which usually have the strongest football teams, Lewiston, Auburn, Portland and Bangor, follow the plan of the four Maine colleges in only playing one game with each school for the championship of the State. Like with the colleges, the other games would be only as practice for the principal games which would come at the close of the season. Twin City residents will soon be jingling almost a million dollars in Christmas Club money in their pockets as they head for the brightly decorated stores with a gift list in one hand and a shopping bag in the other. In Twin City banks, Christmas Club savings by 15,971 persons reached $957,442 this year. The average club payment will be about $60. Everything, both locally and nationally, points to a record year for Christmas sales, said William P. Tewhey, executive vice president of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce. With four fire-fighting vessels posted nearby, cleanup crews began the delicate task of siphoning thousands of gallons of gasoline from a ruptured oil tanker off the Maine coast in Islesboro, Coast Guard officials said. Meanwhile, divers discovered that damage to the hull of the tanker Christian F. Reinauer, which struck an offshore ledge, was far more extensive than previously thought. A gash 21 feet long and one foot wide was found on one side, and a narrower, 14-foot tear in the other, the Coast Guard reported. An undetermined amount of gasoline and heating oil leaked in addition to the estimated 60,000 gallons that escaped between early Friday and Saturday afternoon.
