MEXICO – The Christmas season will be officially kicked off the day after Thanksgiving in downtown Mexico.
The Santa Claus Parade begins at 6 p.m. at Franklin Savings Bank with the guest of honor riding down Main Street in an old-fashioned wooden sleigh carried on a flatbed truck. He will be accompanied by several fire engines from the Mexico Fire Department.
Santa will stop at the Mexico Fire Station, where he will light the Christmas tree, then continue on to Maddy’s Restaurant.
Upon his return to the rear of the fire station, Santa will listen to wish lists by area youngsters who will then receive a bag of goodies.
Some say Santa is really retired Mexico firefighter Dwight Murphy, but others are sure he’s the real thing on leave from the North Pole.
A spokesman for the Mexico Firefighters Relief Association, Jack Arsenault, said the tradition is one that people who now have children of their own used to take part in.
He said the Fire Department conducts several fund-raisers throughout the year so that a sufficient amount of candy can be bought and given to children.
Santa’s arrival and parade takes place in the downtown the day after Thanksgiving regardless of snow, rain, wind or frigid temperatures, Arsenault said.
