BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) – Eight people were injured when a van, carrying adults with special needs on their way home from a work program, struck a car, authorities said.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, according to Braintree police and fire officials.

Both vehicles were heading north on Granite Street on Wednesday afternoon when the wheelchair-accessible van hit a Dodge Neon on Granite Street. The car rolled over, and the van left the road and hit a tree.

The driver of the van apparently was suffering “some type of medical problem” when it rear-ended the car at a high rate of speed, police said.

The van’s driver, whose name was not immediately released, was conscious when police arrived on the scene.

Five of the seven passengers in the van were adults with special needs, ranging from 20 to 50 years old. They were accompanied by a “monitor,” police said.

The van, owned by VHS Transportation of Easton, was taking them from a work program and dropping them off at their homes in Canton and Randolph, police said.
