AUBURN – Community Little Theatre will present ‘Proof,” David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, Jan. 13 to 22 at Great Falls Performing Arts Center on Academy Street. This show, after a sold-out and extended off-Broadway run, opened on Broadway in October 2000. When it closed some 918 performances and 28 previews later Jan. 5, 2003, it was the longest running non-musical Broadway play of the last 20 years.
“Proof” centers on Catherine, (Ellen Peters) a troubled young woman who has sacrificed her own college education to care for her mentally ill father, Robert (Mark Hazard), a professor and mathematical genius. On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine must deal with the arrival of her estranged sister Claire (Liz Rollins) and the attentions of Hal (John Blanchette), a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks Robert left behind. It soon becomes evident that Catherine may have inherited her father’s genius, his illness, or both.
Auburn weaves together a complex family relationship, one woman’s search for her own identity, and the mystery surrounding the authorship of a vital mathematical formula.
