WEST TISBURY, Mass. (AP) – A single-engine experimental plane crashed just after takeoff Sunday at Martha’s Vineyard Airport, killing the only person on board.
The Lancair 360 crashed into a wooded area near the end of a runway at about 12:10 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Murray said.
The airport issued a statement saying the pilot reported a problem just after takeoff, and tried to return to the airport.
There was no immediate information on the cause of the crash.
The pilot’s identity was not immediately released. Murray said the kit-built plane was registered with the FAA on Jan. 20 to an Oak Bluffs resident named James R. Rogers.
Murray and airport officials could not confirm whether Rogers was piloting the plane when it crashed, and other authorities did not return phone calls.
