Dear Sun Spots: This is in response to the Nov. 2 column for the reader seeking a recipe for apple brownies.
I remembered that my mother made them in the 1970s, and they were delicious. I found that I have not just one, but three recipes for them! Two recipes were based on Marjorie Standish’s recipes, and the third was in a CMP bulletin (October 1973). The salt was omitted, but the other ingredients are the same.
I don’t know whether Marjorie Standish was still working at CMP then, but as you probably know, she worked for quite a few years and also wrote a column, Cooking Down East, for the Maine Sunday Telegram. Information in her second book says she retired in 1973. – Madelyn P., Arlington, Mass.
Answer: Sun Spots would like to thank Madelyn P. for all her information and recipes, especially the recipe Beverly Burbank of Farmington was seeking in the Nov. 2 column:
Apple Brownies

Method: Cream oleo and sugar. Add egg and beat until creamy. Add dry ingredients sifted together. Stir thoroughly. Add chopped nuts and apples. Bake in 7-by-11 pan at 350 for 40 minutes. Cool in pan and cut in squares.
Dear Sun Spots: How can a gift certificate to Hidden Treasures be redeemed? They are on Park Avenue in Auburn, and their phone is disconnected. – Anne Ceplikas, Auburn.
Answer: Sun Spots would urge anyone with information on this business, to please contact the column.
Dear Sun Spots: I have lost the phone number of the lady who was looking for sewers to make stockings for the military. I have gone through all the Sun Spots from June to November. I have 15 stockings I would like to give her. Any help will be appreciated. – Slow to Learn, No Town.
Answer: This reader asked to be signed with the attribution above, after being unsuccessful in locating this with a Web search. Sun Spots wanted to assure the reader that oftentimes it is difficult to locate, and she had another avenue to make searching easier. She believes you are referring to the Sept. 20 column and Danielle B’s request, which follows:
Dear Sun Spots: I have been asked to assist in a project for military personnel away from home. This project is making Christmas stockings for them. My friend and I wanted to give them a taste of homemade cheer. I am writing to request donations of any festive Christmas material people might have and aren’t going to use to make these stockings with. Also if there is anyone who might like to join us in sewing stockings, we would love to welcome them!
If you can help, please call Danielle at 786-4854. Thank you very much. – D.B., No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: I may be able to accommodate the lady who is searching for a Scrabble coffee mug. I have two Scrabble coffee mugs that have never been used, and are still wrapped in their box. You may reach me at (207) 782-8270. – No Name, No Town.
