CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Sugarloaf/USA is again opening a torchlight parade to guests to support the Sugarloaf Charity Summit and the Martha B. Webber Breast Cancer Center.

Participants will take to the slopes after the sun goes down on Dec. 27 to join in one of the longest nighttime parades on skis in skiing history.

Traditional Sugarloaf torchlight parades are usually reserved for Ski Patrol and Perfect Turn coaches. Over the years, guests have asked they could be a part of one.

With last year’s first Carry the Torch for the Cure, more than 50 skiers were allowed to participate as part of the fund-raiser.

This year’s event will coincide with Christmas holiday week festivities.

“We anticipate the Carry the Torch for the Cure will become a favorite holiday tradition for Sugarloafers for both those who participate and those who come out to watch,” said Bill Swain, Sugarloaf’s communications manager.

The Carry the Torch for the Cure is open to all skiers and riders who are at least 18 years old, are comfortable negotiating black diamond terrain in all conditions and make a minimum contribution of $25 to the Martha B. Webber Breast Cancer Center.

Proceeds will benefit the Webber Center, which provides breast cancer screening and treatment for women in western Maine.

For more information about the Carry the Torch for the Cure torchlight parade, log on to www.sugarloaf.com/charity.html. To register, email [email protected] with your name, address and age. Advanced registration and a signed release of liability form are required.

A fireworks display will begin as soon as the torch bearers reach the base area.
