ORONO (AP) – Corey Carlson’s goal midway through the third period lifted Vermont to a 2-1 win over Maine on Sunday.

Vermont (10-3, 4-2 Hockey East) broke a scoreless tie less than a minute into the third period, when Mark Lutz beat Maine goaltender Ben Bishop on a breakaway.

The Black Bears (9-4, 4-3) needed only 1:28 to answer. Billy Ryan fed John Hopson, who one-timed a shot over the blocker of Catamount goaltender Travis Russell.

On the game winner, Carlson took a pass from Jeff Corey and beat Bishop.

Maine outshot Vermont 14-6 in the third period and 30-17 for the game, but Russell made some big stops in the third and had 29 saves for his second win of the season.
