MONSON (AP) – Police are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of an elderly couple who were planning a move to an assisted-living facility.

Police were called to the home of 80-year-old John Sandberg and his 78-year-old wife, Mary, Sunday morning after a neighbor discovered their bodies, said Maine State Police Sgt. Steve Pickering. The neighbor had gone to the Steward Road home to help the couple pack to move to the assisted-living facility.

It appeared that John Sandberg shot his wife with a rifle and then turned the gun on himself, sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning, Pickering said.

Investigators have some ideas about what led to the shooting, but had not yet discussed them with the family.

members, he said.
