GREENE – A woman who owned a pair of Rottweilers that mauled a herd of goats on Merrill Hill Road last week was charged in the case on Monday.

Katie Tibbetts, 26, of Nathan Rock Road was charged with two counts of having dogs running at large and one count of owning pets that caused damage to livestock.

Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout said it was Tibbetts’ Rottweilers that mauled seven goats last Wednesday at the farm of Sheldon Bubier.

Tibbetts was summoned when she went to the Lewiston Police Department on Monday to meet with Strout. The animal control officer said financial damage to the livestock has been assessed at $4,200.

Tibbetts could face hundreds of dollars in fines on the charges and be ordered to make restitution. Her dogs were shot and killed by Bubier, who found them attacking his herd. Seven of 20 goats died from their wounds and more deaths were possible.

Bubier said the dogs killed four of his goats right away, and three others had to be put down because of the injuries they suffered. Only five escaped injury.

Bubier happened upon the attack while it was in progress Wednesday morning. He shot and killed both dogs with a rifle.

It was not clear Monday how long the dogs had been running loose before they attacked Bubier’s dogs. Strout pointed out that it is roughly seven miles between Tibbetts’ home and Bubier’s farm.

“They’re on completely opposite ends of town,” Strout said.
