SCARBOROUGH – William H. Marshall, 72, formerly of Summit Terrace, South Portland, died on Friday, Nov. 25, at a Scarborough nursing care facility. Mr. Marshall was a retired high school teacher of Spanish and French.

He was the son of John and Emma Marshall, formerly of Auburn. His father was a mayor of Auburn, an assistant attorney general of Maine and also served in the Maine Legislature. His mother taught in the Massachusetts and New Hampshire public schools.

Mr. Marshall taught foreign languages for 24 years, mostly in Wilmington, Del. However, he served on the faculty of North Yarmouth Academy for one year and also on the staff of the University of Maine, Augusta, for three years. During his teaching career, he authored numerous educational materials in Spanish and French, some published by J. Weston Walch of Portland.

He was a past president of AATF of Delaware and a vice president of DeCTFL of Delaware, where he organized statewide oral language contests.

An active communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Portland, Mr. Marshall was a strong and active supporter of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ and the Portland Public Library. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11257 and a fourth degree member of the K of C Westbrook Assembly 356.

Surviving is a sister, Mary Garthe, of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Thomas Marshall of Wallingford, Conn.; three nieces; and two nephews.
