WILTON – Firefighters extinguished an electrical fire at 47 Knapp St. late Monday night in short order, according to Fire Chief Sonny Dunham. About 14 firefighters responded to the fire in the two-unit apartment building about 11:10 p.m.
It was out “in a matter of minutes,” Dunham said Tuesday.
Wilton police officer Kevin McCutcheon helped evacuate residents from apartment 10B before firefighters arrived on the scene, according to police records. Dunham said he believed the other apartment in the building was vacant, or at least unoccupied, at the time of the incident.
The fire apparently ignited from a faulty wire in wall outlet, and firefighters had to tear out part of the wall to get at it, Dunham said. However, they caused minimal damage, he added.
He said the building, owned by out-of-state residents whose name he was unable to provide Tuesday, may have a number of safety violations. He has requested the state electrical inspector to examine it.
