NEW YORK (AP) – A 6-year-old girl died Tuesday after falling ill in her first-grade classroom at a public school on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

The girl, Jasmine Man, became ill and fell unconscious at P.S. 184 at about 1:30 p.m., police said. The school’s principal, Ling-ling Chou, performed CPR on the girl and rode with her in an ambulance to a hospital, Department of Education spokesman Keith Calb said.

The girl was pronounced dead at 2:05 p.m. Police said there were no signs of trauma.

Calb said crisis teams had gone to the school and would be on hand for the rest of the week “to help students and staff through this tragic situation.”

A woman who answered the telephone at the girl’s house was too upset to talk.

P.S. 184, a dual language school that provides instruction in Mandarin Chinese and English, serves pre-kindergarten through seventh grade.
