VERSHIRE, Vt. (AP) – A Massachusetts man who was using the outhouse at his family’s camp was shot by a boy who was target-shooting nearby and is recovering from his injuries, police said.
Chris Flanagan, 41, of Holliston, Mass., was standing in the outhouse Saturday morning and was hit in the chest by a bullet that came through the building’s door. It came from the .22 rifle being used by a young relative, police said.
Police would not identify the boy, because he is younger than 16. Lt. Leo Bachand of the Vermont State Police also would not say what relationship the boy was to the man, saying to do so would identify the boy.
Flanagan was listed in fair condition at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Bachand said Flanagan and other relatives from around New England were staying at the camp. Though it was still deer season, the men were not hunting, but just hanging out at the camp, Bachand said. “I guess it’s quite a tradition,” he said.
Flanagan had not told anyone he was going to the outhouse, and others in the camp were unaware he was in the small building.
Police said they were still trying to determine exactly where the boy was standing and whether he missed his target or intentionally shot at the outhouse.
Bachand said the boy did not know Flanagan was in the outhouse. When the investigation is done, the case will go to Orange County State’s Attorney Will Porter, who will review it and decide whether to file any charges.
Flanagan emerged wounded by the bullet, which hit his left chest and lodged in his back, and the family called 911.
They were worried the ambulance wouldn’t arrive soon enough, so helped Flanagan into a car and began driving toward the hospital. They had a cell phone and kept in touch with a state police dispatcher when they could get a signal.
On their way through Thetford, they stopped at the town fire station to seek help, but no one was there so they continued south.
The vehicle carrying Flanagan eventually was able to meet up with a town ambulance in Hanover, N.H., from where he was taken the last few miles to the hospital.
