I recently had the misfortune to be in a local funeral procession. The drivers in the Lewiston-Auburn area are among the worst and rudest, almost up in competition with drivers in Massachusetts.

In a funeral procession, it is a courtesy and show of respect to let the funeral procession pass, without being interrupted or disturbed. Some drivers simply have no respect for other people.

Every car in the funeral procession was clearly marked with a flag and had headlights and hazard lights on. Yet there were still drivers honking their car horns at us because we were going through red lights.

I feel there should be an appointed police escort at the beginning and the end of a funeral procession. The cities seem to be able to afford having police in parades, with patrol car lights and sirens blaring, why can’t the cities afford the same luxuries out of respect for our loved ones whom have passed?

There were also drivers who insisted on cutting in on the procession as well. That is unacceptable and inexcusable. With a police escort at the beginning and the end of a funeral procession, those people taking part and their families could rest assured, knowing they were at least safe during the procession.
