THE NUMBERS: Kenneth Lee Boyd became the 1,000th person executed in the United States since 1977, when executions resumed after the Supreme Court lifted a 10-year moratorium.

THE CRIME: Boyd unloaded a .357-caliber Magnum into his estranged wife while their son was pinned under her body. Her father was also killed in the 1988 slayings.
