PORTLAND (AP) – A 48-year-old Rockport man was found guilty of murder Friday in the beating death of his girlfriend in a downtown Portland hotel room.

After hearing four days of testimony, the Cumberland County Superior Court jury deliberated for about six hours before returning its verdict against David Haraden.

The judge set Feb. 17 as the sentencing date for Haraden, who faces a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life imprisonment.

Jurors on Thursday viewed a videotape in which Haraden told police that he found Maxine Witham, 35, alive but on the floor after he returned to their room in the Eastland Park Hotel from walking their dog last January.

In the six-hour tape, Haraden told police that Witham tried to tell him that a man she had picked up and taken back to the room had attacked her.

Prosecutors say that Witham died a slow and painful death after Haraden, a martial arts expert, beat her severely in the culmination of a violent and turbulent relationship.

An autopsy showed that Witham suffered a broken jaw, a swollen brain and numerous contusions and abrasions.

Witham and Haraden had stopped in Portland during their return trip to Rockport from Newburyport, Mass., where Haraden was required to appear for a probation revocation hearing linked to his conviction for assaulting a police officer.
