FREEPORT – The Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education has honored three Maranacook area teachers at the eighth Annual Celebration of Leadership luncheon at the Harraseeket Inn. The educators, Diane Curtis, Christy Owens, and Steve DeAngelis, were recognized for their outstanding leadership in education.

Curtis, grade four teacher at the Manchester Elementary School, and Christy Owens, kindergarten teacher at the Mt. Vernon Elementary School, were honored for achieving National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification. DeAngelis, physics teacher at Maranacook High School, was recognized with one of the two Presidential Awards for Science.

Curtis has been teaching at Manchester Elementary School for 18 years, 11 as a fourth-grade teacher and seven as an educational technician. Curtis received her national board certification in elementary education. Her portfolio included segments in writing, social studies, mathematics, science and contributions to student learning. Six testing exercises were also part of the certification process. Curtis is working on her master’s degree in education through the University of New England distance learning graduate program.

A teacher for 11 years, Owens has spent the last five of those as a teacher with the Mt. Vernon Elementary School. Owens received her national certification in early childhood, ages 3 to 8. Her portfolio centered on video presentations of herself integrating math and science and social studies with the arts. The videotapes were accompanied with written descriptions and analysis of the teaching. In addition, she tracked the writing progress of two kindergartners and commented on her teaching and professional accomplishments.

DeAngelis has been a teacher at Maranacook Community School since 1978. He has taught a variety of math and science courses through the years and for the past 13 years has taught 11th-grade physics. He earned national board certification in adolescent and young adult science two years ago.

He has served as a mentor with the Northern New England CoMentoring Network and is a fellow in the Governor’s Academy for Leadership in Math and Science. For the second year in a row, DeAngelis has been a finalist for the National Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

Union 42 includes Manchester and Mt. Vernon elementary schools and Maranacook Community School.
