JAY – A book launch party for University of Maine at Farmington Associate Professor of Creative Writing Gretchen Legler and her newest work of literary fiction, “On the Ice: An Intimate Portrait of Life in McMurdo Station,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Jay-Niles Memorial Library, Route 4, North Jay.

The party will include a reading by the author, a slide show of images from Antarctica, book signing and refreshments.

Legler is an associate professor of humanities at UMF, where she teaches creative writing workshops in creative nonfiction, literature courses and composition. Her newest book was published by Milkweed Editions in November of 2005.

The book chronicles a six-month adventure at the bottom of the world, which Legler embarked upon under the auspices of a U.S. National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Program grant.

Legler’s other work includes the booklength memoir, “All the Powerful Invisible Things: A Sportswoman’s Notebook,” published by Seal Press in 1995, and numerous essays. Her work has been awarded two Pushcart Prizes.
