I found the Sun Journal Dec. 2 editorial, “No happy ending in Fayette,” to be a sensitive and probing discussion of a terribly sad and admittedly complex issue. Putting emotion aside, the editorial did not attempt to offer any ready-made answers or explanations. Instead, it posed a number of difficult and disturbing, yet profoundly important, moral and ethical questions for which there are no easy solutions.
Indeed, there will be, as the editorial concluded, “no happy endings – only tragedy heaped upon tragedy.” Hopefully, however, such tragedy will teach us all something about the sacredness of all human life, and our individual and collective moral responsibility to respect, protect and defend the divinely given gift of life.
The Rev. Louis Phillips, Fayette
