ENDANGERED ARTIFCATS: A new report says millions of rare artifacts in museums and libraries around the country are disintegrating because of improper storage.

THE NUMBERS: The study found that about 65 percent of the institutions had already sustained damage to their collections.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN? Without proper protections, historic photographs can lose color, rare books and documents can crumble, and military uniforms can be devoured by bugs.

STRANGE, BUT EFFECTIVE: One remedy to protect books – put them into large freezers to kill off mold and paper-devouring beetles.
