The Civil Rights group from Philip W. Sugg Middle School recently attended the annual training session on Civil Rights issues. All Civil Rights groups throughout the state of Maine were invited and encouraged to attend. The training session held at the Augusta Civic Center offered students numerous classroom activities, role play scenarios and other items of interest in an effort to broaden the awareness levels of understanding and to aid in the overall effort of the Civil Rights Teams in reducing the bullying, violence and other areas of discrimination.
Students participated in the day’s activities by relating to and sharing experiences of the categories identified in the Maine Civil Rights Act (gender, race, color, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, religion and national origin) and other topics relating to socio-economic and diversity of the family. The PWS team core focus in school is to work toward creating a safer school climate for all students. The group meets every other Monday after school and invites anyone interested in joining or assisting with projects, to contact school advisor, Kathy Wheat, [email protected], or community advisor, Monica Millhime, [email protected] or call 353-3055. The group is planning on producing a video promoting understanding and acceptance of Civil Rights.
