The cats made their nightly echoes; the dogs howled at the moon. I could see the great starry sky light the inner zoo. The bobcats lay restless; the wolves paced in their cages. I could hear the sorrow song of the parrot, or was it another bird? The gorillas’ snoring woke many animals near by. They stirred and fell back to sleep.
The monkeys, wide awake, pounced from one end of the cage to the other. I saw the hippo look around at all the noisy animals. I saw the fire in the lion’s eyes; he was the king. He let out a fierce roar, telling all he was king. The tigers just stayed low; some wished they could be king. The lionesses knew their place; they ruled. Anything they told the lions to do, they would. Although the lion was king, he still kept an eye out behind him for those brave enough to face him.
