After reading a brief in the Sun Journal headlined “Schools seek improvements” (Dec. 5), I am wondering if it is part of the job description for city government officials on both sides of the Androscoggin River to be hearing-impaired, because none of them seems to be able to hear the taxpayers’ requests to stop spending.

I have said before that school budgets should include maintenance and repairs. How is it that school department officials are smart enough to plan bond requests in the multi-millions of taxpayers’ dollars up to the year 2010, and yet the money never seems to get entered into budget negotiations?

We cannot continue bonding – borrowing or credit card spending – forever. If the city council, mayor and city administrator continue to rubber-stamp all of the bond issue requests, maybe there should be a recall on the Lewiston side of the river.

The interest payment on old bonds is an ever-increasing percent of city expenditures, and taxpayers are going to have to pay the piper and soon with higher property taxes. Mark these words.
