The Jay Fire-Rescue Department has an extraordinary and diverse responsibility for a fire department in a mostly rural area. Obviously, the single largest hazard area is the Androscoggin Mill. Others include: Wausau Paper Corp., Jay Plaza, Jay School System and a major transportation route for hazardous chemicals, petroleum products and tourists. Jay firefighters have met their responsibility through countless hours of training for: firefighting, hazardous materials, extrication, swift-water and ice rescue, and seemingly endless preparation for a response to “all hazards.”

Jay has always had a fleet of excellent equipment that has been well-maintained and cared for. Jay voters have sent a message over the past couple of years of their concern of higher taxes and living within the town’s means. I think the fire chief has received the message, and I know he has tried to acquire the appropriate equipment and reduce the overall cost.

Jay citizens should realize that it is their fire department and their responsibility to protect their citizens, as well as their firefighters. Town residents have a dedicated and hardworking team that has served them very well. Keeping the town’s fleet of emergency vehicles up to date will also help the town meet the needs of expected growth and preserve the current favorable Insurance Services Office rating.

I respectfully ask that Jay residents support their fire chief and firefighters and approve the request for a new pumper.

Randall L. Berry, fire chief, Livermore
