KINGFIELD – Members of the Planning Board met Monday night with lawyers Thomas Johnston and Michael Clisham, of Bangor law firm Eaton Peabody, to discuss changes to the town’s zoning ordinances.

Planning Board Chairman David Guernsey explained that, although the board cannot “plan any major overhaul of the ordinances,” Planning Board members annually review the ordinances to correct “obvious and compelling deficiencies.”

“One such deficiency,” he said, is that “there’s no mention of water withdrawal in the ordinances.”

Since the Poland Spring Water Co. might submit a permit application during the next year, Guernsey said Planning Board members requested that Eaton Peabody lawyers help the town add language regulating water withdrawal.

To write in the new language, Guernsey told the approximately 10 people assembled, “We really lifted most of what the town of Hollis had in their ordinance, and Eaton Peabody made a few minor adjustments.”

The adjustments include the addition of a preapplication to the town’s permitting process and measures to regulate water extraction.

The board will hold a public hearing regarding the ordinance changes in January and will bring the changes to the town for a vote during the annual town meeting.
