BANGOR (AP) – Two children, ages 1 and 3, were unharmed after riding in a sport utility vehicle with their father as he led police on a high-speed chase from Newport to Bangor, police said.

The father, burglary suspect Shawn Boutot, 21, of Brewer, was arrested Monday outside his girlfriend’s home after the chase on Interstate 95 that lasted about a half hour.

Police said they were unaware that Boutot was not alone in the SUV and that small children were secured in booster seats in the back seat. The children were released into their mother’s custody.

“We’re very thankful that the kids were not harmed,” said Sgt. Mark Brooks of the Maine State Police.

Boutot, who was driving with a suspended license, is a suspect in three burglaries in Newport, Palmyra and Dixmont, police said.
