SABATTUS – Selectmen and residents commended the Sabattus Volunteer Fire Department for its efforts during a power outage Thursday night.

More than 100 homes in the Maxwell Street and Lumber Drive area were left without electricity when a car veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole at about 10:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Don Therrien said it was a cold night and the department had concerns for local residents.

“I think we went knocking on more than 100 doors,” he said. “Most had generators, but we ended up bringing a few children back to the town building for a short time until their parent was released from work.”

Selectman Gino Camardese was made aware of the event. He quickly went to the town office and set up a few cots, raised the basement temperature and gathered sports equipment to keep the children occupied until their father could pick them up.

“We’re just glad we could be of help,” he said. “The family seemed very appreciative.”

Power was restored a few hours later.

The Code Enforcement Office will be closing Dec. 21 and reopen Dec. 28.
