AUBURN – Thomas B. “Tom” Pontbriand, 51, of Towle Avenue in Auburn, died unexpectedly Monday morning, Dec. 12, at his home.

He was born in Lewiston on April 11, 1954, a son of Gerald and Thelma (Royer) Pontbriand. He was educated in local schools, and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1972 and from the University of Maine at Machias in 1977. He then remained a lifelong resident of this community.

He was most recently co-owner and operator of the longtime family business known as Pontbriand’s Hardware in Auburn. He also tended the bar in recent years at Pat’s Pizza in Auburn and worked part-time at Lost Valley.

He was a member of St. Louis Church, Fairlawn Country Club, Knights of Columbus, Pastime Club, Auburn Exchange Club, New Auburn Social Club and American Legion Post 153. Among his favorite enjoyments were golfing, skiing, playing cards and being with family and friends. In addition, he loved to spend time at his camp in Jackman, where he would hunt, fish and snowmobile. He enjoyed his travels to Ireland and to the western United States.

He was very sociable and was always willing to help others any way he could with anything they needed at anytime. He will be sadly missed by his family and many, many friends.

He leaves a daughter, Tara Pontbriand of Durham; two sons, Trevor Pontbriand of Durham, and Travis Pontbriand and his girlfriend, Brea Pelletier, of Auburn; his former wife and lifelong friend, Teri Pontbriand, of Durham; his mother, Thelma Pontbriand of Auburn; a sister, Linda Gross and husband, David, of Auburn; a brother, Robert Pontbriand and his wife, Diana, of Auburn, and their children, Erin Breau and husband, Christian, Alyson Farrington and husband, Craig, and Daniel and Matthew Pontbriand; brothers, Daniel Pontbriand of Washington, D.C., Edward Pontbriand and wife, Kelly, and their daughter, Kate, of Gouldsboro, and Mark Pontbriand of New Gloucester.

He was predeceased by his father, Gerald Pontbriand of Auburn.
