SOUTH PORTLAND – Donald James Thompson Jr., 54, of Portland, died Wednesday, Dec. 14.

He was born in Berlin, N.H., on Feb. 15, 1951, the son of Donald J. Thompson Sr. and Viola Waite of Mexico. He was educated in schools in Bethel and Mexico and served in the U.S. Army.

His passions included outdoor activities, history, art, books and travel.

He is survived by his mother, Viola, and stepfather, Eddie Waite, of Mexico; his brother, Gregory and wife, Karen Waite, of Rumford; sister, Susan and husband, Lee Goldberg, of South Portland; nieces and nephews, Alissa, Elaina and Patrick Waite of Rumford, and Tyler and Cameron Goldberg of South Portland; and two special aunts, Berta Olson and Joy Nelson.

He was predeceased by his father.
