SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Tim Brent scored with 5:14 left in the third period to snap a tie Friday night and lift the Portland Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Springfield Falcons.
The goal came 15 seconds after the Falcons (14-11-13) pulled even on a power-play goal by Jim Campbell.
Portland took a 3-2 lead when Ryan Shannon got the puck in the slot after being set up by Brent and powered a shot past Gerald Coleman at 10:15 of the third period.
Corey Perry, who has been on a tear since being reassigned to Portland by Anaheim, opened the scoring 1:17 into the game. Perry has seven goals and 10 assists in 10 games since joining the Pirates (18-7-2-0) on Nov. 23. Dustin Penner, who was just sent down by the Mighty Ducks, scored with 22.5 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Springfield struck 76 seconds into the second period when Marek Kvapil beat Nathan Marsters on a breakaway to make the score 2-1. David Spina tied the score 17 seconds into the third period.
Nine of Portland’s last 10 games have been decided by one goal.
